General Peterson didn't prepare me for this

I haven’t played much golf in my day. Or, you know, any golf. Although I do still have that driver an ex-girlfriend gave me for my 30th birthday. Sometimes my cat sleeps on it in the attic, among other things.

And to make matters worse, most of my golf knowledge comes from watching “Caddyshack,” “Happy Gilmore” and “I Dream of Jeannie” (I remember General Peterson was always trying to beat Admiral Tugwell).

Lucky for you, I didn’t write any of the golf stories in this month’s issue of Real Morris. Wisely, I offered that task to several people with some experience, including Sandy Seegers and Robert Baker.

Ergo, in these web pages you will find:

-- A look at improvements, updates and changes at several golf courses in Morris County and beyond
-- What’s up at the United States Golf Association Museum in nearby Bernards Township
-- Suggestions for required golf reading
-- A quick look at the potable offerings at two Morris County clubhouses and bars
-- Hot new equipment at three Morris golf and sporting-goods stores
-- Ten readers’ opinions on their “perfect” Morris County golf holes
-- A Parting Thoughts column dedicated to one golfer’s “innocent pursuit of hope,” Page 38.

I should probably mention that, because we started working on this issue in March, before some of the courses were open for the season, we’ve used a few of our own file photos, mostly from 2008 and 2007 (including our cover photo of Greg Baker and the large spread photo on pages 12 and 13).

Many thanks to readers (and non-readers) who called or wrote in praise of last month’s “green” issue. Again, we’re sorry we couldn’t include all of the county’s green movers and shakers in one magazine. It’s such a popular topic in this forward-thinking county, however, that we might just have to do another green issue, or at least make it an annual thing.

Starting this month, you’ll be seeing stories about the many facets of outdoor life in this great county of ours, including outdoor dining, of course!
