ON THE COVER: Research chemist Edwin Villhauer stands in a lab at Novartis in East Hanover, where he has worked for the past 23 years. Villhauer, who shepherds new research compounds through their developmental stages, created vildagliptin, a molecule used in Galvus, a medicine for diabetes, in 1998.
